The Hot Springs of Hakone
The historic hot springs of Hakone, a beautiful volcanic region with famous views of Mount Fuji, have been enduringly popular for centuries. Set in the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, the area is a favorite destination among nearby Tokyo residents as well as with tourists from around the world.
Ready to Visit?
You can experience these soothing hot springs at public bathhouses, ryokan (traditional Japanese inns), or even a hotel with a water park. Visit for a day or overnight, and depending on where you stay, soak in communal baths or private ones. When planning a trip, you may want to start with Yumoto, the area’s most famous hot spring. Other choices are found throughout Hakone, including along the shores of Lake Ashi. We recommend staying at least one night to make the most of your visit.
What’s So Special?
The hot springs in the region each have different features and qualities. Sodium carbonate springs are alkaline and have the ability to remove dirt, which can make your skin feel smooth and soft. Different minerals are thought to provide different benefits. In addition, at Hakone, you can enjoy bathing in waters with or near views of idyllic hills and valleys, lakes, or even Mount Fuji!
Natural hot springs have been revered throughout history, and the ones in Hakone are among the best. Is it time for a relaxing, rejuvenating soak?
